News Statement 6/16/2008
Many questions have risen from our announcement of our location, with concerns being expressed over the doctrine of the UUCLV. It saddens us greatly to discover that rumors are being spread based on gross misinformation. We wish to take the opportunity to clarify that Fireside Academy has in no way developed nor endorsed any policy stating the adoption, as a group or for individual members, of all the beliefs of the church that owns the building we are renting for our site.
As an ecumenical homeschooling co-op, we realize
that there will be many differences among our members, as there will be
varied denominations and walks. Our
staff is predominantly Christian and Catholic,
but we all have witnessed the exclusion and near abusive avoidance of
homeschoolers of differing faiths through other groups, even some
claiming to be inclusive.
We feel that sort of behavior is not
only unkind, but goes against the teaching of the Golden Rule-
“Treat others as you would wish to be treated.”
We feel the inclusion of
homeschoolers of different faiths in this guided environment is
an opportunity to expose our children to differences in a way that opens
faith-affirming discussion in the home.
Similarly, we are not, as a group or as individuals, encouraging any
family to compromise their beliefs by supporting any religious or
political agenda through activities with Fireside Academy Community
Co-op. Furthermore,
individual teachers will in no way be focusing on religious or political
themes in the classroom unless clearly specified in the course
description. However,
we do not, nor will ever condone
mean-spirited treatment of others regardless of color, creed, sex,
or faith. Our mission
statement is very clear, and we assure you that our only agenda
is to provide quality learning and social opportunities for
homeschooling families.
